They don't seem to have the destabilising force of Pussy Riot, although there are good contextual reasons for that. They make loud rock music in a similar spirit of provocation to Pussy Galore, and with a similar intention to assault the senses as a means to make you question stuff. Still, they don't possess quite the same deconstructive urges as Pussy Galore's Julia Cafritz and co, who challenged assumptions about everything from racial prejudice to the rock canon and were responsible for grand acts of homage-cum-sabotage such as performing the Rolling Stones' Exile On Main Street in its entirety. After the breakup of Syracuse, New York noise punk band Shoppers , some of its members came together in an unusual fashion to form the ecstatic punk explosion that would come to be known as Perfect Pussy. Singer Meredith Graves was approached by the director of a big-budget movie called Adult World being shot in Syracuse, who asked her to be in the movie playing the part of a local punk band. Graves assembled what she referred to in interviews as a "fake band" writing one "fake song" for the movie with other ex-members of Shoppers. By late the band had caught the ears of many, playing several much-reported sets at the CMJ festival and releasing a four-song demo cassette entitled I Have Lost All Desire for Feeling. The album was received well critically and the band spent much of the year touring internationally, eventually issuing a split 7" with Joanna Gruesome as well as a 7" featuring the song "I" from their demo and an unreleased live cut. Now she sounds as though she's impersonating Yoko Ono over a firestorm of feedback. Oddly, the vocals sound simultaneously like an afterthought and absolutely key to the whole project. On II that voice is thrown against the music in the same way a painter might chuck paint at a canvas. There is the queasy churn of a fairground organ from within the melee. The final minute is like being punished by weather interference.

IV features an onslaught of serrated riffing. So does new single Driver, and although here the voice is a sort of muffled shriek, like a woman screaming to be released from inside a tomb, actually there is a greater clarity in terms of the overall production.
